The Green STRING Corridor project has its origins in the political STRING cooperation.

In 2010, a political decision was taken to create an action plan for STRING; identifying a number of strategic efforts to strengthen integration between regions in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. A specific emphasis was placed on creating regional development in the STRING geography through utilising the effects of the upcoming fixed Femern Belt link; especially in terms of developing an environmentally sustainable transport corridor, contributing to increased accessibility. Such a corridor is seen to benefit the regions businesses through leading to greater regional development of the logistics and transport sectors.  This idea was the foundation of what is now the Green STRING Corridor project.
